Instagram Algorithm
How It Works

Everyone talks about the Instagram algorithm like it's one mysterious gatekeeper deciding whether your content lives or dies. The reality is more interesting and more useful. Instagram doesn't use one algorithm. It uses multiple AI-driven ranking systems, each tailored to a different surface of the app — Feed, Reels, Stories, and Explore. Understanding which system controls what, and which signals each one prioritises, is the difference between posts that reach hundreds and posts that reach hundreds of thousands.
THE THREE RANKING SIGNALS THAT MATTER MOST
Before breaking down each surface, there are three signals that carry weight across all of Instagram. In January 2025, Instagram head Adam Mosseri publicly confirmed the three signals that matter most: watch time, likes per reach, and sends per reach. Sends per reach is weighted 3 to 5 times higher than likes for reaching new audiences, because sharing content in a DM represents the highest intent signal - someone valued your content enough to personally recommend it to a friend.
This is the single most important thing to understand in 2026. If you want to grow beyond your existing followers, your content needs to be the kind of thing people send to someone specific. Not just content people double-tap — content people think of a person for.
THE FEED ALGORITHM - DEPTH OVER DISCOVERY
Your Feed shows posts from accounts you follow plus some recommended posts. The Feed algorithm prioritises relationship strength - how often you interact with the poster. DMs, comments, story replies and profile visits all count. If you message someone regularly, their content appears near the top of your Feed.
The Feed is not a discovery engine. It rewards consistency with your existing audience. Posting when your audience is online matters more in Feed than any other surface. Check Instagram Insights for your most active times and post within those windows. For Indian creators, data from 50 million Indian accounts shows engagement is 40% higher during the 7 to 9 PM IST window on weekdays.
THE REELS ALGORITHM - YOUR PRIMARY GROWTH ENGINE
Reels is where growth happens. Unlike Feed, most Reel views come from non-followers. Watch time is the single most important signal for Reels. Instagram tracks total seconds watched, percentage of video completed, and whether viewers rewatch. If most viewers watch past the 3 second mark, Instagram interprets that as a working hook and pushes the Reel wider.
The critical threshold is the first 3 seconds - research from Meta's internal data shows users make a stay-or-scroll decision in approximately 1.7 seconds. A 15-second Reel watched to completion twice signals more value than a 60-second Reel where 80% of viewers drop off at second 5.
One significant update in 2026: Reels up to 3 minutes can now be recommended to non-followers through Explore and the Reels feed. Longer Reels still need strong retention - a 3-minute Reel with 20% completion rate will underperform a 15-second Reel with 80% completion rate.
THE STORIES ALGORITHM - DEPTH WITH YOUR EXISTING AUDIENCE
Stories work differently from every other surface. The Stories algorithm prioritises viewing history, engagement history and closeness. If you regularly watch someone's Stories, the algorithm pushes their Stories to the front. According to Mosseri, the top ranking factors for Stories are how likely you are to tap into a Story, like it, or reply to it.
Stories are not for growth — they are for retention and relationship building with your existing audience. For the first time in 2026, Instagram is cross-referencing Story engagement with Feed ranking. Accounts with high Story interaction rates — replies, reactions, poll participation — see their Feed posts ranked higher for those engaged users. This makes Stories more strategically important than most creators realise.
THE EXPLORE ALGORITHM - EARNED, NOT HACKED
Explore surfaces content from accounts you don't follow. The path to Explore starts with your existing audience. If your followers engage heavily with a post within the first hour, Instagram tests it with a small Explore audience. If that test audience also engages, distribution expands. You cannot hack your way onto Explore - the sequence is strong follower engagement, small Explore test, expanded distribution if the test succeeds.
The Explore algorithm now evaluates your entire account's content history. Accounts that consistently post about specific topics receive topical authority boosts for related searches on Explore. Posting randomly about unrelated topics actually hurts your Explore reach.
THE BIGGEST SHIFT IN 2026 - ORIGINAL CONTENT OR NOTHING
Instagram now actively penalises reposted content and rewards original creators. Original content receives 40 to 60% more distribution than reposts. Accounts posting 10 or more reposts within 30 days get excluded from recommendations entirely. Instagram uses AI to detect reposts, including slightly edited versions and watermarked content from other platforms.
For Indian creators who repurpose content across platforms - this is the most important algorithm change to act on immediately. Content made specifically for Instagram, shot and edited for Instagram, will always outperform content that was made elsewhere first.
WHAT ACTUALLY MOVES THE NEEDLE FOR INDIAN CREATORS
Based on everything the data shows, here's what matters most:
Keywords in captions and profiles are now more effective for discovery than hashtags, which no longer support follows. Write captions with the words your audience actually searches for - treat Instagram more like a search engine than a social feed.
For optimal growth, post 3 to 5 Feed posts per week prioritising carousels, 2 to 4 Reels per week, and daily Stories with 5 to 7 per day.\
For Indian creators specifically, Wednesday is the peak performing day of the week for most Indian Instagram accounts. Mid-week boredom drives higher scrolling behaviour, and the algorithm tends to distribute content more widely on Wednesdays. The best window is 7 to 9 PM IST.
And the most important reminder of all - sends per reach is the dominant signal for reaching new people. Create content people want to send to a specific friend: relatable takes, useful checklists, surprising data and moments that make someone think of a person they know.
